A giant leaf takes up the bottom right side of the composition. It is adorned with beads and money. In the top left is a portrait of a young woman, overlaid with a square transparent fabric piece.

Title: Slave Ship

Description: A wooden frame serves as the background for this piece. Forty-six dark wooden pieces are arranged within the frame. The pieces are thin cylinders with a wider top, like a mallet. Each piece has ribbed rings along its body and painted-white indentations around its top. Seventeen of these are lined up vertically across the top of the frame, alternating top up, top down. Another seventeen of these pieces are lined up across the bottom of the frame, in the same alternating fashion. In the middle of the frame, twelve pieces are lined up horizontally. Their tops are affixed to the outside edges, alternating right and left, while their bottoms overlap down the middle of the piece.

Description: Inspired by Carmen Miranda, this 2D face has a large decorated headdress. A curved wood piece makes the shape of the chin and mouth, a long piece with two holes creates the eyes, face, and ears. Dangling from the ears are gold hooped earrings. The headdress is a large shape that extends out with two painted yellow banana like curves coming from the top that meet at a green circle at the center.

Description: A wooden board represents the torso of a military man. Attached to each side are two thin sticks, representing arms. Three vintage medals are pinned over his left breast. His head rests above his torso, composed of two rectangles. The lower rectangle is filled with large, white teeth, while the upper rectangle holds two large square eyes, and a projecting nose shaped by a wooden spoon.

Description: A wooden board serves as the background for this piece of a standing figure. The figure’s body is made by the wooden soles of two shoes, positioned inside-to-inside, with their heels at the top. Together, the shoes form a curved body with a broad chest and wide shoulders. A curved black piece topped with a stitched leather hat is attached to the top of the shoes, representing the figure’s head.

Title: Chief Black Tongue

Materials and Techniques: Wooden forms, wood painted black, white rope
Description: A variety of curved wooden forms represent a chief’s face in profile. The basic structure of the face is formed from one large wooden shape. Additional wooden forms are attached, representing the chief’s ears, nose, and forehead. A painted black, curved wooden form ending in a point represents his tongue. It protrudes outward from a recess in the main piece of wood that represents his mouth. A white rope represents the chief’s hair. The top of the rope is knotted, and attached at the knot to a small wooden cube on the chief’s head until it reaches his ear. The rope is attached along the profile of the chief’s head. The remaining rope is unbraided, and dangles from the back of his head to the base of the piece. The base is a cylindrical wooden form.
