Description: A wooden frame serves as the background for this piece. Forty-six dark wooden pieces are arranged within the frame. The pieces are thin cylinders with a wider top, like a mallet. Each piece has ribbed rings along its body and painted-white indentations around its top. Seventeen of these are lined up vertically across the top of the frame, alternating top up, top down. Another seventeen of these pieces are lined up across the bottom of the frame, in the same alternating fashion. In the middle of the frame, twelve pieces are lined up horizontally. Their tops are affixed to the outside edges, alternating right and left, while their bottoms overlap down the middle of the piece.

Description: In the middle of this wood frame is a paper cut scene of water. Attached is a toy boat, with a small fish dangling underneath it. The boat has white sails and a yellow body. On the boat stands a small wooden figure.

Title: Sculler

Subject: Person stretching

Materials and Techniques: Wooden block, wooden forms, wooden spoons
Description: Attached to a narrow wooden block is the image of a person stretching in a seated position. Two identical wooden forms represent the person’s outstretched legs, or, the front of a boat. A large wooden spoon is placed at a 45-degree angle from the legs, representing the person’s back and head that leans forward. At the points where the handle of the large spoon meets the spoon’s bowl are two identical spoons, representing the person’s arms, or possibly, sculls. The bowls of these spoons extend toward the toes, or boat.

Title: Mañana

Materials and Techniques: Wood, paint, bamboo, thin white rope, thick white rope, acrylic eyelashes, plastic American flag
Description: A wood boat, with remnants of blue paint, rests on a small, square, wood base. Emerging from the surface of the boat is a thin stick of bamboo with an American flag waving at its top, representing the boat’s mast. Two pieces of thin, white string are attached from the top of the mast to either side of the surface of the boat. Angular, painted black wooden shapes depict a sailor’s body sleeping on the boat with his back straight, legs bent, and head resting on a coiled pile of red and white rope located at one end of the boat. Three pieces of stacked circular wood form the sombrero resting on the sleeping sailor’s head. Three acrylic eyelashes are attached to his wood face, connoting closed eyes. A triangular piece of wood represents his nose. While one wooden shape represents a bent right arm resting on his torso, the sailor’s left hand extends forward, holding one of the mast’s ropes as he sleeps peacefully.
