Description: The form of a person behind bars is represented with a painted black, square wooden box. This box is mounted onto a vertically oriented, rectangular piece of wood. Within the frame of the wooden box is a wooden form that represents the profile of a standing human figure. A wooden peg represents his eye. This human profile is set in front of a vertical, rectangular wooden form of similar size, painted white. The head of a metal pitch fork punctures through the lower wall of the frame of the box, extending across the box and curving over and away from the box’s edges. Its prongs jut out from the top of the upper edge of the box and the neck of the rake pokes through the lower edge of the box. The rake’s metal prongs represent the metal bars of a jail cell.

Description: The upper-register of this scene is comprised of the image of a woman, Juliet (Venus and Cupid, 1531, Lucas Cranach the Elder, German, Kronach 1472-1553 Weimar, Musée Royaux des Beaux-Arts, Brussels)  looking through the space between two flanking wooden doors that represent the garden wall from William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. In this space, the image of a bed (The Bedroom, 1888, Vincent van Gogh, Dutch, Netherlands 1853-1890 France, Van Gogh Museum) establishes the setting of Juliet’s bedroom. The lower-register of the scene is painted green, representing a landscape (the Capulet’s garden). In the right lower corner is the image of the statue of a man, who represents Romeo.

Description: A variety of pieces of wood are assembled within the frame of a vertical wooden tray, representing a face. The tray has two cutouts for handles located on the two shorter edges. A series of thin pieces of wood divide the tray, or face, into three rectangular registers. Within the upper left register is a square wooden shape that has a round shape cut out of its center, representing his eye. Above his eye is a half circle wooden shape painted black, representing his eyebrow. The same shapes are present in the upper right register of the box, representing his other eye and eyebrow. The central register, in the shape of an upside-down “T” contains the man’s nose and mouth. A large wooden rectangular shape occupies the leg of the upside-down “T.” The mouth is located in the crossing of the “T.” A half-doughnut wooden shape forms the smiling mouth. The bowl of a wooden spoon that is painted red projects from the interior of the arch, with the bowl facing downward, representing a tongue that is sticking out of his smiling mouth. Two wooden half-discs painted black attach to the outer walls of the box at the same level as the eyes, representing ears.

Description: An assortment of wooden blocks in a variety of shapes and sizes are assembled together to fill the interior of a painted black rectangular wooden frame. This frame is situated vertically. While rectangular in shape, it appears in the shape of a thick “I” because the two shorter sides of the box extend beyond its intersections with its perpendicular sides.

Materials and Techniques: Iron and wood shoe last, wooden forms, wooden box, plastic tulip bouquet
Description: A long, narrow wooden box with an arch-shaped hollow stands vertically. An iron shoe last attaches to a wooden cylindrical shape forming the legs and body of the figure. The body stands within the hollow of the box. The toe portion of the iron shoe last extends outward beyond the confines of the box. Two identical, arched wooden forms attach to the top of the woman’s body, and meet in front of her torso, representing her arms. A bouquet of red plastic tulips are anchored to the top of the wooden portion of her body, and extend upward through a hole in the top of the box. The tulips stand at attention above the box, as a blooming representation of the woman’s head.

Materials and Techniques: Wooden box, wooden form, metal hardware including a drawer handle
Description: The image of a man’s face and a wooden cane are set within a rectangular, vertically situated wooden box. Marks from hinges as well as a metal fastening on the box’s frame indicate that the box originally had a door, which has since then been removed. The image of the man’s face and cane are attached to the back wall of the box. A metal drawer handle represents the man’s mouth, while the two holes in the handle though which to place screws represents the man’s eyes. Two curved pieces of metal hardware frame of the man’s head, while the third piece of metal hardware frames the man’s chin. A wooden form in the shape of a small cane extends from the man’s left cheek until the bottom left corner of the box.

Materials and Techniques: Wooden box painted a glossy white, old-fashioned wooden tennis racket presses painted white, white string painted red and black
Description: A wooden box painted glossy white contains a formation of two wooden, painted white, trapezoidal tennis racket presses. Each tennis racket press’ longest side is attached to one of the longer sides of the rectangular box. The presses do not touch the back of the box, creating an impression of floating. White string is threaded through the hole in each of the corners of the tennis racket presses. This string extends across each individual press, as well as between the two presses, creating a design of taut diagonal lines. Two segments of the string are painted red and two are painted black.

Materials and Techniques: Wood boxes, clock parts, spring, shoe horns, found wood objects
Description: A stylized man made of wood and gears is composed as a vertical triptych that speaks to the complex workings of the soul unique to every man in spite of the relatively standard form which our bodies all assume. Three wooden boxes are stacked one on top of another, containing his head, torso and legs and feet. In the top box, a wooden disc with smaller attached wooden forms representing eyes, a nose and a mouth form his head. In the middle box, overlapping metal gears represent his innards. In the bottom box, tapering, ribbed wooden cylinders attach to wooden shoe lasts representing his legs and feet.
