Carolers 1 Carolers 2

Title: Carolers
Date: 1978
Subject: Choir singers
Measurements: 13” W x 7” D x 15 1/3” H
Materials and Techniques: Wooden box, wooden shoe lasts, wooden noise maker, paper sign
Description: A horizontal wooden box encloses this assemblage of three choir singers and a wooden noisemaker. The noisemaker rests on the bottom wall of the box, but its handle extends through the wall so that it projects downward outside of the box. A blue paper sign reads “Turn ß,” instructing the viewer to turn the handle of the noisemaker in order to make noise. Within the box, three identical portions of wooden shoe lasts rest on top of a wooden board that rests on the noisemaker, as though it is a stage. Two small, preexisting drilled holes appear in each shoe last, representing eyes. A pre-existing large circular hole appears in all three of the shoe lasts, representing open mouths positioned to project a large melodic sound.
Note: The carolers are featured in Presentation Portfolio II. However, the surrounding box and noisemaker must have been added later. Exhibited at Camden Art Centre, 1980.
