Date: 1983
Subject: Man behind bars
Measurements: 8” W x 4 3/8” D x 9” H
Materials and Techniques: Wooden forms, red paint
Description: A wooden form shaped like a basket with half-hexagonal sides and only four cross supports is placed vertically on one of its sides with the bottom of the basket facing the viewer. Situated in this manner, the sides of the basket appear as a base and top for the piece and the cross supports appear as vertical bars of a jail cell. A wooden board with a rounded bottom is placed inside of the basket area and is detailed to represent a face. Two identical round wooden forms with holes drilled through them represent eyes, an egg-shaped wooden form represents a nose, and a wooden ring painted red represents the mouth. Carved wooden forms shaped like teeth line the interior of the oval-shaped mouth and appear clenched, emphasizing the gnarled look on his face. Arched wooden forms are attached to each side of his head, representing ears.
